Building muscle mass and focusing on better balance can help reduce the risk of falls and broken bones.  According to a recent review of 111 individual studies with over 55,000 participants, the risk of falling for those over the age of 65 in any given year is about 30 percent.  It is definitely easier to prevent falls than recover from a fall that has already occurred, so to prevent falls, seniors should build muscles that help with stability. According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the best activities for working on stability are walking, water workouts or tai chi — a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. They recommend you consult with your doctor before starting any new activities.

There are also simple exercises you can do easily in your home. Two of these easy balance exercises are the chair stand and toe stand. For detailed instructions to do these exercises, click here.
