What do you look for in friendship? Is it someone that knows how to brighten your day with a good laugh? Someone who cheers you on during trying times?

At Consulate Health Care, our caregivers foster friendships with our residents by “Providing Service with Our Hearts and Hands” and by doing that – they know they’ve got a friend in us. Just 24-years-old, C.N.A Brian Aguiar has been described as a “caretaker, cheerleader, confidant, and close friend” by the residents of Kimwell Care Center in Fall River, MA. His everyday routine is rooted in positivity and he’s well known for treating his residents with the same paramount respect that he does to everyone else in his life. Whether Brian is encouraging his residents to keep trying where they may have failed before or cracking jokes in the hall to brighten someone’s day, it’s clear to see Brian’s friendships blossom with his residents at Kimwell.

While Brian is well-known for his humor and upbeat attitude, his care for his residents goes far beyond that. Since Brian began working at Kimwell in 2013, he developed a close relationship with one of his residents and his family throughout his stay here.  It was clear that Brian cared deeply for this resident, and when the resident passed away, he was noticeably shaken by the loss. So what would a good friend do? Brian came into the care center on his day off to visit with the residents and together try to console one another. When the family asked Brian to be a part of the ceremony, Brian humbly agreed. Touched by the family’s request, Brian acted as a pallbearer at the funeral, which is an honor usually reserved for family and close friends. But that’s exactly what Brian was; a close friend.

Brian’s energy contributes to the positive work culture that employees want to be a part of. One of his fellow co-workers said, “there is no guessing when Brian enters the building,” because his laugh and positive attitude brighten every room he’s in. Kimwell Executive Director John Fredette said during staff appreciation events Brian not only shows his gratitude to Consulate by volunteering himself to help, but also encourages his fellow staff to join in. His infectious enthusiasm, optimistic attitude, and lighthearted jokes allow Brian to nurture relationships that extend beyond residents and to his colleagues.

IMG_2318Brian’s respect and care is not isolated to just his residents but he also offers his friendship to all residents at Kimwell. The lengths Brian goes to just make everyone feel welcomed is what compelled many of the staff, residents and visitors to nominate him for the ACE Award.  On October 16th, Brian, his wife, parents, fellow staff, and residents joined in celebration to honor Brian and his accomplishments at Consulate.

So what do we look for in a friend, you ask? We look for Brian Aguiar. He has fostered friendships with residents by exemplifying our Core Values in all that he does. We’ve witnessed his compassion when he took time to console our residents. We’ve seen his honesty and integrity when he offers a helping hand at staff meetings. We believe it’s the unprecedented trust and respect Brian offers that has created a bond with his residents at Consulate Health Care and we’re honored to call him an employee, a caregiver, and a friend.
