In many cultures, holidays mean one thing: festive, delicious food. From appetizers to desserts, chances are there are some dishes you look forward to all year round. If you celebrate Hanukkah, here are some timeless foods to incorporate into this year’s celebrations.

Potato Latkes

Simple, classic, and absolutely delicious, latkes should definitely be on your Hanukkah menu. Prepare some at home using this recipe, courtesy of Chabad.org. Grab these ingredients to get started:

  • 1/2 an onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for frying
  • 3 teaspoons Kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup flour

To begin, sautée  the diced onion in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of salt, and remove from heat once they’re golden brown. Using a food processor, grate the potatoes and then place them in a bowl filled with cold water.

In a different bowl, put the onions, 2 teaspoons of salt, flour and eggs. Drain the potatoes extremely well, then add them to the bowl, mixing all the ingredients together. Heat about 3 tablespoons of oil on a frying pan over medium heat. Use a 1/4-cup measuring spoon to drop individual latkes onto the pan. Press each pancake down and fry for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until they’re golden brown. Enjoy!

Latkes and applesauce are delicious by themselves or when eaten together.

Applesauce

Looking for a sweet topping for those savory latkes? Try this tasty recipe from Eating Well magazine. Get started with these ingredients:

  • 6 Macintosh apples, peeled and diced into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled and diced into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

In a large saucepan, combine the water and apple pieces. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the fruit appears very soft, mash it to your preferred texture while adding the cinnamon and syrup.

Bagel and lox

Start your day the right way with the traditional Jewish combination of bagels and lox. Use this recipe from Food Network. Grab these items:

  • 1 teaspoon cream cheese
  • ½ teaspoon scallion, finely chopped
  • 1 bagel
