Hot summer weather makes big, heavy meals sound unappetizing. Snacks are great for large social gatherings and provide a lighter, easier option to enjoy eating in the summer heat.

Fresh and Fruity

Stock up on your favorite fresh fruits this summer for three sweet options:

  1. Fruit pops: Mashing up and freezing fresh fruit not only offers a cold and sweet snack, but provides a fun activity for kids to help with. Pick your favorite fruit, blend it, stick into a mold and add a popsicle stick. Let sit in the freezer for a few hours for an icy cold treat.
  2. Fruit smoothies: Chose your favorite mix of fruits, or try blending the fruit together with fat-free or low-fat Greek yogurt and ice for a refreshing treat. Sip through a straw or freeze longer to eat with a spoon.
  3. Slice ‘n’ serve: Finding creative ways to serve fruit is fun, but sometimes the old-fashioned slice ‘n’ serve is just as satisfying too.

Cool and crisp

Keep a variety of cool and crisp vegetables on hand that are easy to chop up and serve as a healthy grab-and-go option. Cucumbers, carrots, celery, and bell peppers are all good choices both alone or served with a fun dip too.

Mix it up

Have you ever thrown out more of a trail mix than you ate because the ingredients just weren’t your favorite? Stop buying those store-made trail mixes and make your own to customize it with all of your preferences! Add your favorite nuts, candies, dried fruits or seeds. (Just be sure to keep your servings to 1.5 ounces or 1/3 cup).
