Kathleen Stametz, LPN from Wellington Rehabilitation and Healthcare, in Knightdale, NC, adds her recipe for homemade meat sauce to the Consulate Family Cookbook. The sauce is delicious with pasta and served with a side salad.

Ingredients:

1 pound of ground beef (80% lean)

2 tsp. of crushed garlic

1 32 oz. can of crushed tomatoes

3 32 oz. cans of tomato puree

1 tsp. garlic salt

½ tsp. of dried basil

1 pinch of sugar

1 tbsp. of Italian seasoning

½ cup  of parmesan cheese, shredded

Optional – Italian sausage links

1 pound of pasta

sauce

Directions:

Brown the ground beef in a large skillet.

Add the crushed garlic to the skillet.

Drain the meat.

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato puree, garlic salt, basil, sugar, Italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese to the mix.

Cover and let simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours.

Cook your favorite type of pasta (following the directions on the pasta box) and mix together with the sauce when ready.

Optional: Add italian sausage links for more flavor. Cook the sausage first in pot of water for one hour prior to adding to the sauce to have minimal grease.

Notes: Extra sauce can be frozen in a tupperware and saved for future meals!
