January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, and Consulate Health Care wants to ensure that seniors and those who care for senior loved ones  are educated regarding the disease. Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that occurs when the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, is damaged. It is usually caused by high eye pressure and it is prevalent in the elderly. In the early stages of the disease, the patient may not have any symptoms, but the disease later causes vision loss, and can even result in blindness. Early detection and treatment are the best ways to minimize the effects of glaucoma.

Because glaucoma has no symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred, it is extremely important to to have regular eye examinations. Eye doctors can perform a number of tests to detect glaucoma. The good news is that if the disease is found early, there are treatments that can help protect your vision.
