When you have an employee who spends almost two decades at your care center, you know they are special. We found out that one of our employees recently celebrated eighteen years of service at Brownsboro Hills Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Louisville, KY. Knowing she must have many stories and things to say about her time there, we had to speak with her. What we found was that Mary not only loves what she does, but she absolutely loves the people she cares for.

Mary started her career at Brownsboro Hills working in central supply. She then made her way up to a certified medication technician, then to a CNA, and is currently working as a medical records coordinator. With all of the different positions that she has worked in, and the time that she has spent at Brownsboro, we had to ask her why she has stayed there for so long. She said, “Number one, I like what I do. I know I can retire, but I’m just not ready to retire. I tell my kids, I think God will let me know when it’s time to sit down. It keeps me active. I just enjoy it”.

It’s obvious that Mary truly enjoys what she does each day, because it certainly is not easy. Her day is very busy from the moment she steps in, until the time she leaves. Although a large portion of her job is filled with important administrative tasks, Mary always makes time for the residents. She absolutely loves to interact with them, and she wants to help out whenever she can. On most days, she comes in early just so that she can finish up her paperwork, and have time to go visit her residents.

Many of the residents will only respond to Mary. She has on several occasions come out to the dining room just to make sure that one resident eats. She attributes her ability to talk to the residents to her time as a CNA. Not only is she skilled at working with people, but she also likes spending time with the residents. She said, “I don’t have to be out there, but I try to work my time around that so I can be out there.”

Mary is one of those people that wakes up happy each day. Even at seventy-eight years old, she has the energy of her younger self and she always brings that with her. We asked her what motivates her to come to work each day and she said, “Well, really I just look forward to getting up. I feel like God has blessed me and if I am able to get up and get to work, I want to be a blessing for somebody else.” She truly hopes that she is a blessing not only to the residents, but to her co-workers too. You might think that Mary is a counselor based upon the number of people that come to her just to talk. She offers wise advice to many people about work, and life in general.

Mary has an overall respect for everyone that she comes in contact with. Young or old, work-related or personal, she is there and will do whatever she can to help someone in need. Mary feels that it’s important to have respect for all. She said, “I want to be respected myself, and if you don’t respect yourself, no one else is going to respect you.” Her positivity and wise words of advice ring true in every aspect of what she does. We are very proud to have Mary as a part of our Consulate Health Care family and we thank her for her years of service. Congratulations Mary!
