Most of us have heard stories about seemingly normal people doing extraordinary things in unimaginable circumstances. We pause to reflect and sometimes wonder what we would have done had our fortunes been switched, and we realize how thankful we are for the courageous people that often put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of others.

This was the case for Tandi Turner the morning of June 18 when her compassion for helping those in need knew no boundaries. Tandi was stopped at a red light when she saw a car collide with a young boy on his bicycle. That young boy was Remmie McCoskey, and he was on his way home from football practice. He was thrown 10 feet in the air and landed on top of the car; his head, neck, and shoulders absorbing the majority of the impact. Tandi, instinctively drawing on her nursing knowledge, parked her car and ran to Remmie’s side. Her first thought was to immobilize his c-spine because of the way he had landed. By immediately immobilizing his spine, she was able to drastically reduce the chance of further injury.

Tandi held the boy until the paramedics arrived and then met Tonya, Remmie’s mother, at the hospital. Tandi stayed at the hospital to lend support throughout the day. Remmie was hospitalized for several days with injuries to his shoulder, a broken clavicle, chipped ankle, and cuts on the back of his head. Tandi called Tonya daily to see how Remmie was doing and to let the family know that she was praying for him. She even stayed in touch with the family during Remmie’s recovery, visiting the hospital and providing meals to help out when she could.

For her brave actions and compassionate nature, Tandi was presented with Consulate Health Care’s Community Hero Award. Her quick-to-act mentality and people-first focus not only helped a child in distress, they exemplify the values so many of our caregivers hold close to their hearts. We’re humbled to work with such compassionate people.
