Motivation brought Carl Worick from Kenwood View Health and Rehabilitation Center back to his feet.

Two years ago, Carl suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk and use the left side of his body. Carl came to Kenwood View in Salina, Kansas where he was very resistant to physical therapy. His stroke changed his positive outlook on life and he rarely wanted to even get out of bed. It took three special caregivers – Desirae, Katherine and Amber – to help him recover and find inspiration again.

After a choking accident that hospitalized him, Carl was faced with the reality of not being able to care for himself. This gave his caregivers the catalyst they needed to change his life and motivate Carl to get back on his feet.  With his caregivers’ support, Carl took the first step towards recovery by participating in physical therapy. Desirae, Katherine, and Amber were extremely diligent with Carl’s recovery care plan, ensuring his clinical needs were met each day while keeping his desire for an independent lifestyle as encouragement. KenwoodViewtextThese three nurses even served as role models for their colleagues at Kenwood View to work towards bettering our patients’ quality of life. Carl’s trio of nurses encouraged him to attend therapy every day and championed him to recovery. The day Carl stood up for the first time in over two years was Desirae’s birthday. She couldn’t imagine a better gift than seeing how her efforts positively impacted one of her residents.

Carl’s story is why people like Desirae, Katherine and Amber excel at their work. They understood they couldn’t change the fact that Carl had a stroke. Instead, they focused on how they could motivate Carl to achieve a better quality of life. The guiding principles of physical therapy – to respect the dignity of people and treat them with compassion – is consistent with Consulate Health Care’s Core Values and drives our mission of “Providing Service with Our Hearts and Hands.”
