There’s nothing like taking a little time for yourself to indulge in what makes you happy. You may be painting your next masterpiece, perfecting a new culinary creation, or claiming victory on the playing field; taking a little time to do what you love is always a good decision. At Consulate Health Care, we understand the importance of pursuing your passions and remaining active, so we provide our residents with an abundance of opportunities to do exactly what they love to do.

This week, as we celebrate National Activity Professionals Week, we’d like to highlight the dedicated members of the Newport News Nursing and Rehabilitation Center’s activity staff in Newport News, VA, who have dedicated their time creating, initiating, and supervising a diverse calendar of activities our residents are actually excited to take part in. We know they’re excited because they pick the activities themselves!Activities_Prof_text-01

Director of Activities, Tina Guthrie, has worked at Newport News as the Activities Director for over 15 years, and with the help of her dynamic team, volunteers and the community, the activities program has grown into what it is today. Tina and her team always go the extra mile when working with our residents, making sure to constantly encourage them as they pursue new activities while always being available to lend an ear when they need someone to listen. Thanks to the hard work of Tina and her team, Newport News’ residents have an outlet to try new activities at their own pace, or take part in the things they already love to do.

I always think my main job is to make the lives of my residents happy and help them have the best quality of life possible. That means helping them do what they want to do.”

The activity staff works hard every day to keep residents happy, updating a fluid activities calendar that changes with the desires of the residents. This system gives residents more of an opportunity to interact and socialize with others while coming up with new ideas for future activities. Outings are also open to families, giving residents an opportunity to do something they love with the people they love right by their side. Every day is an opportunity to try new things with the support of  an encouraging  staff that continues to foster an atmosphere of respect, understanding and engagement towards all residents. We know our staff will continue to be one of the best around because for them, work isn’t just work – it’s a passion.

For Tina, the many faces she works with from day to day are more than just residents – they’re family. “I have great love for seniors and really do enjoy my job more than words can say. The experiences I get to enjoy with the residents are absolutely priceless.”

We’re so incredibly thankful for our dedicated Newport News staff that not only gives our residents the opportunity to stay active and do the things they love, but also allows them to pursue one of our Core Values: their passions. With their unyielding commitment to serving each and every resident, our staff is able to create and foster a supportive environment that feels just like home. We know how important it is for our residents to pursue the activities they love, and with the help of Tina’s team, we are excited to watch the activities program continue to grow and flourish within the Newport News community.
