Transitioning to a senior living center is a big adjustment. Not only are your physical settings changing, but your social environment is being altered as well. Many seniors experience anxiety before the move, worried that they won’t be able to secure a good circle of friends at their new residence. If this is a concern you have, don’t stress. There are plenty of ways to connect with others and find friends in no time.

First, you need to enter your new surroundings with the right mindset. AARP spoke to Marla Paul, author of “The Friendship Crisis: Finding, Making, and Keeping Friends When You’re Not a Kid Anymore.” Paul noted that many seniors see themselves as being too old to make new, lasting connections with others, but they should eliminate this negative notion. She explained that people are always looking to make relationships with others, so you shouldn’t shy away from the possibility of entering a new social circle.

You're never too old to make new friends.

You’re never too old to make new friends. You should also take advantage of your center’s social clubs and activities. Examine the options that are available and select a class or meeting that’s relevant to your interests. For example, if you’re passionate about literature, consider attending book club gatherings – you’ll probably meet some similarly enthusiastic bookworms. The more meetings you attend, the more people you’ll meet, so don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something you wouldn’t normally participate in.

Lastly, you shouldn’t hesitate to put yourself out there. Although this can be a scary concept, it’s the most effective way to get to know others. Geri Moore recounted her personal experience in an essay she wrote for Cape Cod Seniors. Moore was finding it difficult to socialize in her new center, until she threw a spur-of-the-moment snow day gathering in her apartment. Over tea, treats and a potluck of homemade dishes, the other residents introduced themselves and she was able to make a slew of new friends.
