With flu season upon us, we are all doing our best to avoid getting sick. The following are some tips to keep the flu away this winter.

  1. Build up your immune system:  Get plenty of rest. Lack of sleep makes you more prone to infection. Make sure you are getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Exercising regularly also helps beef up your immune system.
  2. Protect others from your germs: If you are sick, try to stay home from work, school and public places. This can prevent those around you from getting sick. Also remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  3. Protect yourself by avoiding close contact with sick people: Make sure to limit yourself from contact with others when you are feeling sick. Flu germs can linger on places like tables, counters, desks, doorknobs and faucets for up to eight hours. When you touch a germy surface and then touch your eyes or mouth, you are putting the virus directly into your body.
  4. Wash your hands often with soap and water: When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Try to remember to do this every time you shake hands or touch a surface that may be germ-covered so you can quickly remove toxins and germs.

While it’s not possible to guarantee a sickness-free winter season, using these tips will help reduce your likelihood of catching the flu or another bug.
