Sometimes it’s the people you least expect that help you the most. In some cases, it’s the pet that you least expect. When this patient couldn’t move her entire body, an unlikely hero came through to help her in the best possible way. It’s only fitting that for National Physical Therapy month we highlight this innovative occupational therapist, her determined patient, and their little friend.

When Thelma Jeffrey first arrived at Consulate Health Care of Windsor in 2005, she was completely bed-ridden. A series of strokes brought on by her diabetes had left her weak and without feeling on the right side of her body. Even with the odds against her, Thelma wasn’t one to lose her positive outlook. She remained determined to regain her strength and control over her now paralyzed right arm. When she was introduced to occupational therapist Jeanne Ireland, Thelma was eager to start working toward regaining her independence.

Jeanne was immediately inspired by Thelma’s determination and can-do attitude. Even though past methods of therapy had failed Thelma, Jeanne continued to identify and test new approaches. It was during her next visit with Thelma that Jeanne brought in her pet guinea_pig_textboxguinea pig, Snickers. Although Thelma enjoyed petting and feeding Snickers, at first she was reluctant to hold him. Her paralysis left her unsure if she would be able to carefully hold such a small animal and feared that she might drop him. Over the next few weeks, while gradually overcoming her fear of not being able to properly hold the guinea pig, Jeanne and Snickers worked with Thelma to regain the use of her right arm, but this was only the beginning. Over time, Thelma regained her ability to shake hands, operate a wheelchair, and most important to her, wrap her arms around her daughter, something she hadn’t done in ten years.

By thinking outside the box, Jeanne created a solution that helped Thelma accomplish her goals faster than she’d ever imagined possible. When she showed this passion and willingness to go above-and-beyond for a patient, Jeanne exemplified everything our Core Values are meant to stand for. Everyone at Consulate Health Care of Windsor is proud and thankful to have Jeanne as a member of their team. Thank you for everything you do, Jeanne.
