What is Medicare?

As defined by the Social Security Administration, Medicare is our country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or older. People younger than age 65 with certain disabilities, or permanent kidney failure, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease), can also qualify for Medicare. The program helps with the cost of health care, but it doesn’t cover all medical expenses or the cost of most long-term care. Why will Medicare be issuing new cards in 2018?

According to CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), Social Security numbers are being removed from Medicare cards because of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015. This act requires CMS to remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019.  The biggest reason  for taking the SSN off of Medicare cards is to fight medical identity theft for people with Medicare.
