November is National Diabetes Month, which means that all across the U.S. people will be taking time to bring attention to this common yet serious illness. If you’re among the 116 million Americans with prediabetes or diabetes, or you have loved ones dealing with this disease, you may be wondering how you can participate in raising awareness. Here are a few ways you can get involved.
Attend events
Of course, one of the best ways to participate in National Diabetes Month is to attend formal fundraisers or discussions, which help gather donations and distribute information. Diabetes organizations hold various events each year dedicated to spreading the word about the illness in addition to raising money for diabetes research. Here are a few examples of activities:
Step Out:
The ADA holds “Step Out” walks across the country throughout the fall, not only in November. Participants get pledges from donors who give a designated amount of money for each mile walked. In addition to adding funds to diabetes research, these events are great opportunities to meet other people in your community who are passionate about spreading awareness. If you’re unable to walk long distances, consider volunteering at one of the events in a different capacity, or simply donate money online. Visit the ADA website to find a walk in your area.
Conferences:
Another excellent way to observe National Diabetes Month is to attend a conference. Awareness organization Taking Control of Your Diabetes holds large gatherings, which are combined with health fairs, across the U.S. all year long. These events bring together medical experts, advocates and diabetics from all over with the goal of spreading important information on how to stay happy and healthy after a diabetes diagnosis. November’s conference will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, but you can also make donations and watch conference videos online if you’re unable to attend.
Change your lifestyle
