You’ve probably heard that exercise is good for stress reduction.  You might be wondering how that works. Here are some facts:

exercising to relieve stress

  1. Exercise pumps up your endorphins which are your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. You may have heard this being called a “runner’s high.” According to a Harvard Health Publication, exercise also reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol.
  2. Physical exercise can serve as meditation. When you are concentrating on your breath and body movements, you haven’t had time to focus on your daily tensions.
  3. Regular exercise can improve your mood by helping you relax, lessening the symptoms of mild depression and anxiety and it also helps you get a good night’s sleep.
  4. Even simple breathing exercises can help reduce stress.
  5. The American Psychological Association states that exercise seems to give the body a chance to practice dealing with stress.

As with any physical exercise, you should always consult with your doctor first.
