What does a microphone have in common with a loofa, a roll of tape, a rubber duck and an antler headband? Well, probably nothing, but each of these items was incorporated into an exciting staff scavenger hunt held at our Newport News care center in Virginia.

At the start of each shift, staff members were informed of the items that were hidden in common areas throughout the care center. As the scavenger hunt items were uncovered one by one, the winning staff members returned the item to the activity office to redeem their prize: a free pizza coupon from Domino’s. Resident provided moral support and encouragement throughout the event, cheering with enthusiasm as the staff scanned every corner of the center’s common areas during their shift. And, while the winners laughed appreciatively about having an evening off from cooking dinner, everyone in attendance had something to smile about that day.

Like many of the other events hosted at the Newport News Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the scavenger hunt provided a lively evening of fun and amusement that both the residents and staff members could enjoy. And while our selfless Newport News employees often dedicate their time to hosting events and designing exciting activities to benefit residents, they rarely take the time to reward themselves with activities of their very own. These staff events are one small way that we repay them for their unparalleled dedication to their calling.

So we will ask the question one more time: What does a microphone have in common with a loofa, a roll of tape, a rubber duck and an antler headband?

The answer—they help us in thanking our Newport News staff members for everything that they do.
