Elderly individuals may be able to help ward off dementia and depression by staying socially engaged.  Everyday Health cited a study from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago that found highly social seniors had a 70 percent lower rate of cognitive decline than their less social peers.

Here are some tips for seniors to stay socially engaged:

  • Nurture relationships with those who are important to you including friends, family and neighbors
  • Keep your mind challenged by completing puzzles or playing games like chess
  • Join a book club, collector’s club or any other group of people who share the same interests as you
  • Consider taking a part-time job or volunteering in the community
  • Offer to help take care of children in your family
