While some people love to be cared for by others, Winona Manor’s Activities Director, Hazel Knight, and Activities Assistant Dorothy Phillips, love to serve others. Together, Dorothy and Hazel have a total of 71 years of compassionate service. To honor their dedication and passion, Dorothy and Hazel were presented with plaques of appreciation for their commitment to the care center, its residents, families, staff, and community.
Hazel’s passion for serving senior citizens has been with her since she was a young girl. She grew up helping to care for her “Granny” at home, which she says has made Winona Manor feel like a home away from home for the last 37 years. Working in her hometown in Winona, Minnesota, Hazel has earned the nickname “Sunshine” as a reflection of her cheery personality and dedication to providing the best possible activities program for the residents. The bright, bold colors she loves to wear may also have contributed to that nickname.
Dorothy, who has worked at Winona Manor for 34 years, says that as an Activities Coordinator, “it is a pleasure to see a smile on the residents’ faces. The residents of Winona Manor have become my family.” She’s quick to recognize that her residents are at the heart of what she loves.
Consulate Health Care employees such as Hazel and Dorothy treat residents like loved ones; they create relationships that allow them to care for residents like family, not because it’s their job, but because it’s their calling. They find joy in their residents’ happiness, and celebrate their residents’ triumphs. If a resident isn’t doing well, they take it upon themselves to ensure that their frown turns upside down.
