When the weather outside gets frightful, there’s nothing more delightful than curling up with a good movie. During the holidays, you’re probably looking for films that help you get into the Christmas spirit. Here are five classic Christmas movies to watch this December.
1. It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
If watching this Frank Capra classic isn’t already part of your holiday routine, consider starting a new tradition. This movie focuses on Jimmy Stewart’s iconic portrayal of George Bailey, a lost and unhappy father whose Christmas Eve experience explores the question “What if I had never been born?”
2. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
While this film is great for all ages, it’s a wonderful option to screen when you’re spending time with children. Little ones will love watching as Rudolph, whose red nose sets him apart from the pack, joins forces with Hermey the dentist and Yukon Cornelius. Rudolph is a timeless classic that’s perfect to get you into the holiday spirit.
3. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
When a department store Santa claims to be the real thing, will anyone believe him? This holiday classic is both dramatic and uplifting, and will make even the most ardent Scrooge believe in the magic of Christmas. While this classic film was remade in 1994, watch the original version for a dose of classic holiday charm. As a bonus, this flick features some gorgeous shots of New York City.
4. A Christmas Story (1983)
Although this film was made in the ’80s, it perfectly captures the essence of Christmas in the 1940s. The movie follows Ralphie, a little boy who wants nothing more than a B.B. gun for Christmas. You’ll have plenty of laughs as you watch him navigate the holiday season with his eccentric family, trouble-making classmates and neighborhood bullies.
5. White Christmas (1954)
Fans of musical theater will adore this quirky 1950s flick, which takes place at a struggling Vermont Inn. Can a pair of singing sisters and some former soldiers create a musical act great enough to save the hotel’s finances? This movie stars some classic Hollywood actors, like Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby, and features Irving Berlin’s beloved tune of the same name.
