Jacksonville, Florida has one of the biggest concentrated populations of seniors in the U.S. The locale has a lot to offer, like balmy weather and lots of sunshine. Plus, with the burgeoning group of older people, there are many activities that are perfect for mid-week fun away from the tourist crowds. Heading to Jacksonville? Check out these five activities for seniors:

Take to the water

One of the biggest draws of Jacksonville is its proximity to the ocean. While downtown isn’t directly on the coast, Mill Cove and the St. Johns River flow right through it. And the many gorgeous beaches are within a 20 minute drive. Water has many benefits for seniors, especially those who have arthritis. Swimming reduces the effects of gravity and offers a great way for older people to be active without all the usual joint pain. Plus, salt water makes it easier to float, providing extra buoyancy for swimmers. Seniors should slather on sunscreen, fill a water bottle and head to the beach. Don sunglasses and a hat and consider avoiding swimming in the middle of the afternoon as this is when the temperature is the hottest.

Try a new physical activity

Many seniors make the move to Florida because they want to enjoy nice weather all year round. They may come from the Midwest, for example, where they sat inside all winter. With the fabulous heat of Jacksonville, why not try some new physical activities? Forget boring water aerobics at the community pool, or fast-walking around a local mall. Instead, try Zumba, bring your yoga mat to classes on the beach, or even put on a life jacket and try standup paddleboarding! There are plenty of opportunities to play and get exercise at the same time while learning a new physical skill.

Do some volunteer work

When seniors are no longer part of the workforce, they may lose a sense of purpose. This can lead to feeling lonely and unhappy, especially when coupled with moving across the country. If you’re new to the area, or are just looking to add some meaning to your week, consider volunteering. Find a charity that appreciates your talents. You can teach drawing to kids at a YMCA, for example, or walk dogs at an animal shelter. Offering your time to help others can make you feel great about yourself, upping your morale and giving you a sense of pride.

“Volunteering can up your morale and sense of pride.”

Invite loved ones to visit

One of the many benefits of living in such a great place is that people will want to come see you! Get to know Jacksonville so you can show your friends and family around. Visit some restaurants to get a feel for the local cuisine and even take a cruise along the riverfront or coast. You can be your very own tour guide and lead your loved ones on a Jacksonville adventure. Or, leave that up to professionals and try a food tour, historic walk or boat trip around the area. You’ll fall in love with Florida all over again.
