When No One Was Looking
We’d like to share a short, yet heartwarming, story with you about Denise Thayer. By title, Denise is a secured unit manager at Consulate Health Care’s Charlwell House, but Denise is defined by far more than her title. If you ask her managers and co-workers, they’ll be the first to tell you about Denise’s kind heart, friendly nature and seemingly limitless generosity. But, the true story of someone’s character is told not by what others say about them, but by how they act when no one is looking.
One night during her shift at Charlwell House, Denise noticed that one of her residents, Dora, wasn’t wearing any shoes. She asked Dora, “Why aren’t you wearing any shoes?” just before spotting them on the floor nearby. Dora’s shoes were worn, tattered, and in desperate need of replacement. Denise, on a mission, left and returned within the hour with a box containing a brand new pair of shoes. Dora was over the moon! When Denise helped put the new sneakers on her feet, her face beamed with pride. It’s the same expression she has when she receives compliments on them (which is often!).
What we love so much about Denise’s story is her selfless and compassionate service. Instead of seeing Dora as a resident, she saw her as a person in need and provided her with the best care she knew how. That’s what caregivers at Consulate Health Care do – selflessly give of themselves in the service and care of others. That’s the embodiment of our mission – “Providing Service with Our Hearts and Hands”, and that’s what makes Denise one of our many Ambassadors of Care.
