The National Center for Assisted Living shared that the September 11 – 17, 2016 National Assisted Living Week theme is “Keep Connected.“ This phrase is meant to encourage assisted living communities to promote seniors communicating with people around them through the use of new technologies. If you have a loved one who lives in a senior community, consider helping him or her celebrate National Assisted Living Week with these tips:
Teach a computer class
Seniors are digital immigrants. This means they didn’t grow up like today’s kids who use technology on a daily basis. Seniors may have a difficult time navigating a computer or tablet on their own for their first few tries, so why not teach a tech class at your senior loved one’s community? You can help the residents understand the basics of communication such as setting up an email account or even creating a Facebook page. It’s great fun for seniors to keep in touch with loved ones they don’t see often by following them on social media. Plus, writing emails is like penning letters, a pastime many people enjoy.
Provide seniors with tech gadgets
Many senior living communities offer a computer or Wi-Fi so residents can access the internet. Does your senior friend or family member have a device to use? If not, consider putting a tablet or laptop on your list of gift ideas for the holidays. Or, if you have a device at home that isn’t being used, why not give it to the senior? He or she would likely love being able to browse local theater showings, talk to friends and check the weather right from his or her room. Be sure to clear the computer or tablet of all information you don’t want on it such as photos or other documents. Also bring along the charger and any other accessories so the senior can have the full experience.
Bring in the grandkids
Who knows better about technology use than grandkids? Millennials and younger adults are champions at doing everything via the web. Bring your kids in to talk with their grandparents about any questions they may have about using a computer, tablet or smartphone. Grandkids can prove helpful in setting up bill paying accounts, using online banking, shopping online and much more. Plus, they know all the hottest social media sites and can offer their grandparents some fun games to play! You may even find the generations bonding over Pokemon Go.
Thank the staff
While the theme of National Assisted Living Week is about communication between seniors, you can use this as a perfect opportunity to thank your favorite staff members at the senior community where your loved one lives. Let them know you appreciate all their hard work in caring for your friend or loved one with a card, flowers or even tasty treats. You can thank everyone from the dining staff to nurses and administrative assistants – everyone plays a part in ensuring your loved one is safe and happy in their senior community.
