More Than a Friend: Shoni’s Compassionate Care for Rosa Wells is a Testament to Her Heart and Character
Shoni Montgomery, a Consulate Health Care nurse, and Rosa Wells, a rehab technician for the past 18 years, were co-workers and friends at Winona Manor Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Winona, Mississippi. Together they served their residents graciously, but little did they know that their relationship was about to change forever.
Rosa had been battling cancer, and following a series of failed cancer treatments, she realized she needed a familiar face to help her stay comfortable during her final days. She turned to Shoni who, honored by the request, didn’t need to spend any time rallying the Winona Manor team. Her co-workers quickly became Rosa’s biggest cheerleaders and, in addition to providing their emotional support, the team organized fundraisers – lunch sales, raffles, and bake sales – that would raise money to assist Rosa financially. The fundraisers collected nearly $8,000 to help alleviate medical bills and other expenses. Shoni continued to care for Rosa with the same compassion and kindness she offers all of her residents, making sure that she was comfortable until she was called home on October 4th, 2014.
Consulate Health Care is known for treating residents like loved ones and going the extra mile to provide comforting care during physically and emotionally challenging times. Shoni and Rosa’s relationship reminds us that a caregiver can mean much more to a resident than what is apparent at a surface level and we are so incredibly grateful to have the privilege of recognizing each of these inspiring women as a part of our family.
