Summer is the season for road trips and family vacations, which, often times, also means messing up the healthy practices you’ve worked so hard to implement for yourself and your families. Fight back and stay healthy, no matter your destination, by following our healthy road trip tips:

“Rest breaks” don’t have to mean resting

Pick a road stop or park that allows all of the travelers a chance to burn off some energy. Take a brisk walk, have a dance party or do a short exercise. An added bonus: the driver will feel re-energized and more alert.

Resist the gas station snack urge

Avoid satisfying travel hunger and stocking up on junk foods from gas stations or rest stops by packing healthier snack options. Some healthy snack options include apples, oranges, grapes, raisins, whole grain fiber-rich crackers, etc.

Stay active outside of the car too

Pack items such as a football, volleyball, soccer ball or a Frisbee to incorporate physical activity into your vacation itinerary.

Quench your thirst

Staying hydrated is important for health and energy. However, resist the urge to drink soda, which has unnecessary sugars and calories, and pack water, milk, or 100% juice drinks instead.
